Building innovation in India

Despite a global economic downturn that has rippled across India, the country remains one of the world’s fastest growing economies, second only to China. India is also the planet’s second most populous nation, expected to overtake China by 2030.

In the first ever MIT-India Conference, held Friday, Sept. 23, at the MIT Media Lab, speakers from both MIT and India explored the challenges associated with India’s rapid expansion, including energy distribution, rural access to health care, and efforts to curb governmental corruption. One theme was prevalent throughout: India’s many hurdles also provide unprecedented opportunity for innovation.

N.R. Narayana Murthy, the conference’s keynote speaker and founder and chairman emeritus of Infosys Limited, said the time is right for those who choose to work in India.

“They can be part of an era where there’s so much confidence, there is so much hope, there is so much ambition,” Murthy said. “And there is so much that needs to be done.”

The conference featured entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, finance experts and government officials from India, as well as MIT faculty working on India-related projects. The one-day event sought to strengthen the relationship between MIT and India, which MIT Chancellor Eric L. Grimson characterized at the event as a “century-long friendship.”

In his opening remarks, Grimson noted that the friendship began in 1906 when Ishwar Das Varshnei became the first Indian to graduate from MIT. In 2010, his great-grandsons, twins Kush and Lav, followed in his footsteps, earning PhDs in electrical engineering and computer science. Today, more than 270 students of Indian descent attend MIT; Grimson cited the Institute’s many India-related projects — fifteen of which were featured in a Technology Showcase during the conference — as a strong bridge between the Institute and India.

“If MIT wants to stay on the forefront of technology, it has to maintain ties with India,” Grimson said.

The conference got underway with a panel discussion on energy and the environment. Panelists noted that as India’s population continues to expand, so too will its energy demands.

E.A.S. Sarma, former secretary of economic affairs in India, cautioned that the country “can’t go in a wanton manner for megawatts.” Sarma, now a social activist working to protect rural communities from pollution created by local powerplants, insists that communities should have a say when it comes to building new plants.

“If you bring people into discussions from the start, they may help develop benign processes,” Sarma said.

However, Robert Stoner, associate director of the MIT Energy Initiative, pointed out that above and beyond meeting the energy needs of India’s projected population growth, nearly 400 million current citizens already lack access to electricity.

While panelists discussed the potential contributions of solar, natural gas and nuclear energy, the overall consensus was that it would take a combination of approaches to solve India’s energy problem. And in many cases, those solutions will have to be extremely affordable.

“There’s opportunity for low-cost innovation in lots of areas,” Stoner said.

Manufactured Goods Lead Surge in Indian Exports

When Ranjit Date returned to India 20 years ago after earning a doctorate in robotics from an American university, he hoped to help automate factory assembly lines in his home country.

His company, Precision Automation and Robotics India, has done that. But more recently it has also begun selling robots to Western manufacturers like Caterpillar, Ford and Chrysler. This year, in fact, a third of Precision Automation’s sales will come from exports, up from almost nothing five years ago.

Mr. Date’s company is emblematic of a recent surge in exports of engineered and other sophisticated goods from India — a country perhaps better known for exports of skilled services like software outsourcing.

But in fact, Indian exports of goods are now nearly double exports of services, growing 37.5 percent, to $245.9 billion, in the 12 months that ended in March. Leading the way are high-value products like industrial machinery, automobiles and car parts, and refined petroleum products.

Indian exports are following a different path from that taken by other Asian countries like Japan, Korea and China. Those countries started by exporting products like garments and toys made by large numbers of low-paid, low-skilled workers, before moving to more sophisticated products like cars and industrial machinery.

Indian Rail to Raise Funds for Expansion

Indian Rail is planning to raise Rs100bn ($2.2bn) in tax-free bonds by September to expand the country's rail network.

State-owned Indian Rail plans to use Rs53bn ($1.1bn) to lay additional rail tracks, Rs21bn ($460.5m) to widen of rail tracks and Rs8.5bn ($186m) for electrification.

Indian Rail intends to raise Rs205bn ($4.4bn) this year, including a record $750m from overseas, as the ministry improves facilities to lure traffic from roads.

The overseas plans include $200m from loans and a $300m bond sale, which will be mainly used to buy 18,000 cars for hauling iron, steel, cement and other cargo.

Indian Rail is planning to lay about 1,300km of new lines this year to cater to an increase in freight and passenger demand.

The country is expanding its rail network as it is aiming for rail to account for 50% of inland freight movement by 2020, compared with its 35% share in 2009, according to Bloomberg.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery Now to Be Performed in South India

Robot-assisted surgery has been used in the U.S. for many years. But now patients in South India will also benefit from this kind of surgery, with the first robotic healthcare facility opening June 26, according to indiainfoline.com.

Led by KIMS (Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Ltd.), a 500 bed, multi-specialty hospital, robot-assisted surgery will now be used in such specialties as urology (prostate, kidney, and urinary bladder) and gynecology surgeries (such as hysterectomy), with other specialties to be added, including ear, nose and throat, and gastro-intestinal surgeries and liver resections, according to Dr. Bhaskar Rao, cardiothoracic surgeon and managing director and chief executive officer of KIMS, addressing a press conference today.

Some of the first surgeries will be for cardiac patients, according to Dr. Rao in the press release.

Robotic surgery is a technique in which a surgeon performs surgery using a computer that remotely controls very small instruments attached to a robot, according to nih.gov.

This procedure is done under general anesthesia and the surgeon sits at a computer station nearby and directs the movements of a robot. Small instruments are attached to the robot's arms. The surgeon first inserts these instruments into the patient’s body through small surgical cuts. Under the surgeon’s direction, the robot matches the doctor’s hand movements to perform the procedure using the tiny instruments.

Optical Control of Magnetic Effects at the Nanoscale

Magneto-optical effects, which exploit the interaction between light and magnetic materials, have only been relevant for fundamental research and up to now rarely used for applications. Plasmons – electronic excitations in metals with dimensions at the nanoscale – recently opened a new way to concentrate light at nanoscale. This allows plasmonic circuits to be built with electrical as well as optical control at this dimension scale. It would be ideal to apply such optical control for processing data on hard drives. This way writing and scanning frequencies of up to one billion operations per second, impossible so far, can be achieved. For this purpose it should be possible to optically switch the magnetic storage elements of a nanometer size on such hard drives. Optical excitation of plasmons could also be used here. Physicists at TU Dortmund around Dr. Ilya Akimov and colleagues from Russia and India now succeeded in developing a procedure to merge magneto-optics and plasmonics.

Indian engineering students awarded by NASA

Six teams from different engineering colleges of India were awarded in a competition organised by international space agency NASA, for designing a lunar vehicle for future expeditions to the moon.

The competition -- Great Moonbuggy Race competition challenges the students to tackle several engineering problems dealt with by Apollo-era lunar rover developers at the Marshall Center in the late 1960s.

Students from high school and college are supposed to design, build and race lightweight, human-powered rovers called "moonbuggies".

Luxury carmakers eye India’s super-rich

Global ultra-luxury carmakers are pouring into India. The country that is home to almost half a billion of the world’s poorest citizens, as well as the largest national group of billionaires outside the US, has become the next key market for sports cars worth more than $1m.

Aston Martin, the British luxury car manufacturer, is the latest to announce its entry into India’s coveted high-end car segment, signalling that the nation’s clan of über-rich has become too big to ignore.

Project focuses on factors that affect fuel-cell performance

UK and Indian researchers are to work together on a project to obtain a greater understanding of the factors that affect fuel-cell performance and durability, particularly in relation to using readily available fuels, including waste biogas.
Prof Mark Ormerod of Keele University’s Research Institute for the Environment, Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics is heading the collaborative team of six leading research groups from the UK and India.

Jaguar Land Rover Likely To Open India Assembly Plant By End-May

Jaguar Land Rover, a unit of Tata Motors Ltd. (TTM), is likely to open its first assembly plant in India by the end of May, said a spokesman for the U.K.-based luxury car maker.
"We are still in talks with executives from Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover on an exact date" for opening the plant, the spokesman, who declined to be named, told Dow Jones Newswires late Monday. "But, end of May would seem realistic enough."
