Tesla Motors is a change-agent, leading our culture to view electric cars as the “new” transportation standard. With the upcoming launch of the Model S, the world's first premium electric sedan, Tesla is working to completely transform the 100-year-old automotive industry. As a technology disruptor, Tesla faces no shortage of challenges. One obstacle that is front and center, especially with an upcoming release of a new model, is how the company will ramp up production quickly, cost-effectively and with the highest quality.

A quality issue today could mean more than simply a public relations “hiccup;” it could seriously hamper the survivability of what is still a fragile, nascent market. Despite its current low production volumes (compared to major players in the automotive industry), Tesla has made an investment in a robust intelligence and analytics solution.

By leveraging Apriso’s Manufacturing Process Intelligence (MPI), Tesla will have real-time visibility to key information about their production processes, highlighting bottlenecks and quality issues within their production lines within the plant. This intelligence provides a window into the inner workings of their complex operations. The collected data essentially provides the foundation for insights into what characteristics can provide the right “levers” to manipulate and improve process and product performance.

Manufacturing intelligence can be used to provide immediate feedback to operators and mechanics. Detailed scrap and rework analysis can be performed to enable manufacturing and quality engineers to surface and correlate relationships among the data in order to best understand and continuously improve product quality while removing variation within production. Manufacturers can then reap immediate benefits from scrap and rework reductions and higher first pass yields.

Tesla and other leading companies across a wide set of industries are leveraging Manufacturing Process Intelligence for a broader, deeper range of analytics. With an integrated reporting analytics platform and pre-packaged analysis cubes, intuitive user interfaces, reports, dashboards and excel reports, MPI helps manufacturers to streamline production process planning while gaining measurable business intelligence. Companies can then quickly gain increased visibility into their complex manufacturing processes for easy access to a wide range of data – an ideal framework to embed analyses in any part of a manufacturing process.

Manufacturing companies may not feel the same pressure to introduce new technological advantages like Tesla. However, rigid production processes stifle production efficiency. With the rise of globalization, world-wide competition is forcing manufactures to produce more goods, more efficiently, faster and with higher quality.

In today’s fiercely competitive market, companies must evaluate potential competitive advantages. By 2013, real-time intelligence will be a priority investment for companies seeking to compete in new market places and penetrate new industries.
